Honey has been used throughout human history. Stone Age paintings from 8000 years ago show bee products treating disease.

‘Bee’ mindful:

It is advised not to give raw honey to children under 12 months due to botulism risk.

Not to worry - about 90% of botulism cases occur in infants under 6 months old, and are not honey related.


Bee Propolis

What is bee propolis?

Bee propolis is a resin-like material bees make to build their hives. It acts as a glue to seal the hive and disinfects the colony.

Bee Propolis contains over 200 compounds including essential oils, flavonoids, tannins, antibiotics, minerals (iron, manganese, zinc, copper, cobalt, calcium, silicon, magnesium), vitamins and amino acids.

Medicinal Effects

Antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-ulcer, anticancer, adaptogen (counteracts the harmful effects of stress in the body), tissue strengthening, anti-aging, anti-mutagenic, anti-allergy, immune system booster.

History

Bee Propolis has a long history of medicinal use. Greeks have used propolis for abscesses; Assyrians have used it for healing wounds and tumors; and Egyptians have used it for mummification.

Common Uses

Disinfectant / Anti-Fungal / Anti-Viral: When taken internally Bee Propolis can help treat infections caused by bacteria (including tuberculosis), fungal infections, and viruses (including the flu, H1N1, and the common cold). There are also studies being conducted which show promising results in the prevention of the Covid-19 virus.

Topical Application: When applied to skin, bee propolis can promote the healing process of cuts, burns, herpes and shingles. Propolis can be used as an antiseptic wash or salve that prevents the growth of bacteria. 

Add a couple of drops to your daily skin regimen. It’s moisturizing and antimicrobial properties are anti-aging and help to treat acne. It can reduce the appearance of brown spots and give the skin a smoother, more supple look and feel.

Anti-Cancer: According to the National Institutes of Health, Bee Propolis is anti-cancer in a number of different ways, including initiating apoptosis (regulated cell death) in cancer cells.

Anti-Inflammation: Bee Propolis helps treat diseases caused by inflammation in the body such as arthritis, boils, acne, asthma, dermatitis, ulcers, and inflammatory bowel diseases. 

Oral Health: When used as a preventative mouthwash Bee Propolis can treat canker sores, bad breath, gingivitis, tooth decay and gum disease. It can also help to speed healing following oral surgery, and relieve sore throats.

‘Bee’ Mindful:

Warning - If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have asthma, bleeding conditions, or allergies to bee products.

  • A certain chemical in bee propolis might slow blood clotting. This can occur during and after surgery, and in those with bleeding disorders. Stop taking propolis two weeks before surgery.
  • Propolis is not recommended in cases of severe cardiac problems, kidney failure and liver disease.
  • Do not use bee propolis if you are allergic to bee by-products, conifers, poplars, Peru balsam, and salicylates.
  • Bee propolis can aggravate asthma.
  • Due to the lack of research in pregnant people, it is recommended to avoid ingesting bee propolis during pregnancy and breast-feeding.
  • It is recommended not to take more than 1,000 mg of bee propolis per day.

Drug Interactions: Medications changed by the liver, medications that slow blood clotting, Warfarin.

Talk to your doctor before using bee propolis if taking these medications.


Bee Product Info

Our raw bee products come from a local farm in Saline - Dave’s Honey Farm. His colonies are happy and healthy!


Storage 

If stored properly, your bee propolis and honey will last indefinitely. Keep in a cool place and out of direct sunlight. Do not contaminate! 

For Bee Propolis - Keep the lid screwed on tight so the alcohol does not evaporate! If it does, you may pour in more food grade alcohol to reconstitute the propolis.


Dosing

Bee Propolis - Our recommended starting dose for Bee Propolis as a health supplement is 1/4 dropper - about 16 mg per day sublingually or added to a drink. 

How to Take Sublingually

  1. Shake the bottle thoroughly.
  2. Fill the dropper with your dose.
  3. Squirt the propolis under your tongue, swish, and keep in your mouth for approximately 1 minute.
  4. Swish and swallow.

Honey - The typical starting dose for Island Farms Honey as a health supplement is 8mg per day - One heaping teaspoon of honey.
